GTI GLOBAL CITIZENS MOVEMENT
INTRODUCTION TO GTI/GCM ON NETWORK NATION
The Great Transition Initiative (GTI) has sponsored an electronic conversation on convening or developing a Global Citizens Movement (GCM). Information gathered here is generally taken from this online conversation, exploring the notion that emerging new online technology can significantly expand and accelerate the movement from theory and speculative philosophy to effective social-change activism in the context of what appears to many people to be a wide-spread and complexly-intertwined social and economic and ecological emergency.
CATALYZING A GLOBAL CITIZENS MOVEMENT
How can we assist in the birth of a movement? What primary questions do we need to address? How can we contribute to or support the existing movement? What unique role can we play?
GLOBAL COMPETENCE MATRIX - EDUCATING GLOBAL CITIZENS
From http://globalcompetencecertificate.org/global-competence/why/ "Globally competent individuals possess and apply the following qualities, characteristics, and abilities to learning about and engaging with globally significant issues. Educators that aspire to help students become globally competent must both develop these attributes in themselves and find ways to foster them in students."
THE CONCEPT OF NATIONAL BORDER
In a global context, what is the role and authority of traditional national borders? How should traditionally-independent nations with well-defined borders control immigration? How should they manage trade relationships? Do "sovereign nations" have the right or authority to define their own rules and law within their own borders? Most people with a traditional perspective would say "absolutely yes". But problems with immigration -- certainly in the USA -- make this position problematic and extremely expensive.
COMPREHENSIVE INCLUSION AND BRAINSTORMING
Global citizenship and global activism are huge and complex subjects, with innumerable aspects that some people may find important or essential. We want to be inclusive. Please list subject areas that you believe should be included here.
CREATING A SHARED MAP OF REALITY
What are the key elements of a shared consciousness or map of reality that humanity needs to guide it towards ecological viability and nurturing the best of our humanity? These ideas have appeared in our email conversation or in essays contributed by our participants.
PROCESSES FOR CATALYZING A GCM
What steps do we have to take? What do we need to do?
SHIFTING PARADIGMS AND SOCIAL CONVENTIONS
What enables change at a fundamental level in society? How can citizens or movements shift their thinking?
THE UNITY IN OUR DIVERSITY
How can humanity move forward together, in common purpose and common cause?
ACTIVISTS, AGENCIES, COLLEAGUES, PARTICIPANTS, CITIZENS, AUDIENCE, MARKET
Who is our audience - who are our potential co-workers and colleagues? Who should we contact and who will naturally want to work with us?
DIALOGUE, MEDIATION, FACILITATION, PEACEMAKING
What is the role of dialogue facilitation as we bring diverse and conflicting groups into the same conversation? Can we use professional or trained facilitators? How can we build strong facilitation into our work together?
INVITATION AND OUTREACH - VOLUNTEER NETWEAVING
Who should we be contacting? Who can help us? Who wants to work with us? How can we support them? What is "netweaving"? What is a "netweaver"? How can we reach out to and help coordinate the well-motivated and concerned energies and efforts of a network of concerned global citizens who care about some aspect or aspects of this work, and want to help "weave a world that works" ("www")? How can we build an effective global-scale alliance around what simply amounts to "many issues at the same time", when most people or groups tend to be involved with one or few issues?
GUIDING ETHICAL VALUES
What should be our guiding values, and how should they be derived?
PURPOSE, MOTIVATION, GOAL, INTENTION, OBJECTIVE, MISSION
What is your purpose or mission? What are you or your organization attempting to accomplish? Please list brief purposes or items that describe what you want to do, in a form that can be selected by others who share your objectives.
GUIDING PRINCIPLES AND VALUES
Many aspects of this work are guided by principles and values, which influence all aspects of our interaction. We want to be as democratic as possible, while listening to all voices and considering all aspects of the larger whole we are exploring.
SOCIAL CHANGE THEORY
How can our work together help influence or guide social change? What should we do? How can we act together? What forces or influences actually influence or change society?
SOCIAL CHANGE ACTIVISM
We know we are living in a time of complex crisis, that is threatening to overwhelm life on earth. How can we become an effective force for inspired and enlightened social change? What should we do, what do we stand for, who should we contact, how should we act?
DIMENSIONS OF ECOLOGICAL CRISIS
It seems we are generally agreed that we are in a critical period of global crisis. What are the large-scale dimensions of this crisis, how are they inter-related, and how can they be addressed?
CRITICAL ISSUES
What critical common issues do we need to address?
LARGE-SCALE ELECTRONIC DEMOCRACY
How can the internet support and empower a global democracy movement? How can the internet introduce historically unprecedented improvements in the quality of democracy? How can the immense "data-processing capacity" of the internet support and encourage the growth of unprecedented new developments in the meaning and effectiveness of democracy? How can we "parse" or divide the immense range of concerns faced by any global citizen? How can we effectively "regionalize" this work, while still retaining a "one world global perspective"? What is the relationship between democracy and "cybernetics"? Some authors talk about the need for stabilizing the world within "bounded ranges"? How can a cybernetic model of global governance support or enable that potential?
THE SPIRIT OF COMMUNITY
As the world becomes one community, the fundamental principles of ideal community become guiding ideals for global citizenship. What is "community", and what are its fundamental guiding principles? What is the proper and balanced relationship between individualism and personal freedom, and "communitarianism" and responsibility to the community? What is the relationship between "community" and "collective intelligence"? As a group or community, do we "know more" or somehow become more effective if we "listen to all voices" -- or are we setting ourselves up for the corrupting and confusing influence of "group think" and the "Abilene Paradox"?
THE VISION OF ONENESS
Oneness, wholeness, the universal, the all. Can all ethics be derived from oneness? Is this vision the container for our entire movement? Are all issues interconnected with one another in the same sense that all people are interconnected? Are all facets of reality actually the "synthetic cognitive construction" of human psychology, as our thinking mind slices an undivided reality into concepts and assigns labels?
DESIGN OF OUR COLLABORATIVE MOVEMENT
How can we most fruitfully and correctly organize our work together?
FUNDING MOVEMENT ACTIVISM
How can we finance an organizing project at this level? Who should we talk to? What do we have to do? What does it actually cost to develop this project? If we were funded, what would we do with the money?
DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY
How can we persuasively introduce such a broadly inclusive project into a world dominated by specialization? How should we design this movement, and what is the role of visionary leadership?
NEW RESEARCH AND SCIENCE
What new subject areas are becoming pertinent? How can new ideas from science help advance our movement?
PROJECT DESIGN AND SUCCESSFUL WORLD SERVICE
We want to support and encourage "any global citizen anywhere" with a commitment to some phase of this emerging vision. What does this project have to do or provide in order to engage and support your successful participation? How can we help you? What do you suggest? What would you like to see happening?
CRITICAL ISSUES AND SOCIAL PATTERNS WE MUST ADDRESS
Different sectors and cultures in the world are not working well together. Please list problem areas that must be addressed if the world is to move into a new era of enlightened collaboration and shared understanding
